Board Game Editing

I’ve been a huge board game enthusiast ever since I was young. I was that weird kid who read game rulebooks for fun, memorizing every rule so that I could correct people as we played. Thankfully, I’ve grown out of that annoying phase, but I still enjoy playing and collecting board games. It’s my favorite hobby, and a goal of mine is to help other people enjoy tabletop gaming as much as I do. Some of my current favorite games include Everdell, Dead Reckoning, and Star Wars: Rebellion.

Now I know not everyone is like me, memorizing rules for fun. Most people use the rulebook to learn how to play the game, and then as a reference when questions arise. I’m sure you’ve seen examples of rulebooks that are extremely helpful, and you’ve probably also seen rulebooks that have a lot of problems. I’m here to help turn your rulebook into something organized, coherent, and interesting.

I have a lot of editing experience, including a Bachelor’s degree in Editing and Publishing from Brigham Young University. I have experience editing everything from magazine articles to blog posts to historical fiction novels, but my real passion is board games. Text is a big part of board games, specifically when it comes to rulebooks. If you want your rulebook to be clean, professional, and easy to understand, take a look at the following services that I offer.

Copyediting

Copyediting is precise, line-by-line editing for polishing up finished text. During copyediting, I edit for grammar, punctuation, usage, spelling, and capitalization errors according to The Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster’s dictionary. I also check for accuracy and consistency. Upon request, I will also create a style sheet to keep track of your style preferences and other editorial decisions.

Rulebook Organization

One of the things that can make or break a rulebook is its organization. A good rulebook needs to be organized in a way that can be easily understood when newcomers are learning your game, but also in a way that makes it quick and simple for players to find rules that they have questions about while playing. I have a plethora of experience with scouring rulebooks, and I can organize your rulebook so that it is an effective tool in helping players enjoy your game.

Substantive Editing

Substantive editing is focused on tightening and improving sentences and paragraphs. It’s less concerned with the tiny details and more concerned with improving overall readability. With substantive editing, I’ll offer comments, make edits, and leave suggestions for improving clarity, flow, and style.

Rulebook Design

If you’re looking for a designer, I can design your game’s rulebook for you. It’s important to make sure your rulebook looks clean, professional, and fits in thematically with your game. I’ll design and format your rulebook for you, as long as you have the text and graphics thad you’d like included in your rulebook. If you need help creating those assets too, reach out to me and we can discuss options.
